About this course

This course provides a basic knowledge and practical skills that may help in life threatening and non life threatening situations for babies and children. It is intended as an introductory course for baby and child First Aid.

This course does not fulfil Ofsted’s first aid requirements for early years teachers, nursery workers and child minders (as defined within the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage 2014 and within The Child Care Register guide). To fulfil these requirements candidates must attend the two day PAEDIATRIC FIRST AID course.

Who this course is for

The course is suitable for anyone who cares for children, whether as a parent, grandparent, teacher, teaching assistant midday assistant, after school staff, early years practitioners, childcare professionals, carer, nanny, grandparent, babysitter etc. A competent person should assess the workplace and its requirements to ensure the course meets the full needs of their organisation. No previous first aid experience is required to attend.

Candidates should have a positive attitude, be responsible, have an aptitude to help, be able to think clearly in times of need, be willing and able to learn new skills, be physically able to deal with demanding emergency situations and have good communication skills.

What the course will cover

Theoretical and practical understanding of how to administer first aid to babies and children in life threatening and non-life threatening situations including (but not inclusive of):

  • Foreign body airway obstruction
  • Seizure
  • Unresponsive and breathing normally
  • Choking
  • Bleeding
  • Anaphylaxia
  • Shock
  • Unresponsive but not breathing normally
  • CPR
Assessment

Candidates must be 14yrs and older and will be continually assessed (e.g. Paediatric wounds, bleeding, shock, unconscious casualty, baby & child, CPR & choking) alongside a final multi-choice question paper. Candidates must attend all of the course. This is not a First Aid at Work Certificate.

Course ‘Housekeeping’

All candidates will receive a certificate on successful completion. The course involves some scenario based role play activities so please dress appropriately. If you have movement/bending problems please let us know so we can plan alternative activities.
